Pub BRAWL ends in murder conviction
Nathan Gothard, 37, was found guilty of manslaughter on Thursday at Leicester Crown Court for fatally punching David Darke, 66, outside The Crown Inn in Appleby Magna on December 21. Darke sustained a serious head injury that cracked his skull and died in hospital six days later. Gothard had initially lost a fight with another man named Ty Fern, who knocked him to the ground. After Darke helped him up, Gothard punched him in the face. Gothard denied both murder and manslaughter charges but was convicted of the lesser offense. He was cleared of murder and will be sentenced on May 22.
The case underscores the serious legal and human consequences of street violence and bar altercations. A single punch resulting in death demonstrates how quickly pub disputes can escalate into tragedy, with lifelong implications for both victims' families and perpetrators. The conviction also reflects the judiciary's stance that violent impulses, regardless of preceding events, must be held accountable under law.
The incident occurred amid an already tense atmosphere at the pub. Gothard had arrived before the evening crowd and engaged in inappropriate behavior toward female patrons from a nearby staff Christmas party, prompting the landlady to escort him away. Rather than leave, he became involved in a separate confrontation. Gothard claimed self-defense, stating he threw a "pre-emptive strike" because he feared being attacked again after Fern's assault, but the jury rejected his account.
